Referral Nurse Vacancy – MSF WaCA Kano Project
Médecins Sans Frontières West and Central Africa (MSF WaCA) is recruiting for the position of:
REFERRAL NURSE
Location: Kano, Nigeria
Contract: Fixed-term to Open-ended
Working Hours: As per Nigerian Labour Law

Main Purpose of the Role
To manage and follow up on severe malnutrition and NOMA cases requiring referral to higher-level facilities, following MSF protocols.
Responsibilities
Referral Coordination
📌 Ensure timely and smooth transfers for patients needing specialized care
📌 Coordinate logistics – documents, appointments, and safe transport
📌 Maintain clear communication and follow-up with referral patients
📌 Document referral details – dates, feedback, and follow-up outcomes
Collaboration & Advocacy
🤝 Advocate for patient care at referral facilities
🤝 Liaise with AKTH & MSF Sokoto for bed spaces and admissions
🤝 Coordinate with social welfare units for billing and discharge
🤝 Work closely with MSF team and referral facility staff
Clinical & Logistical Support
🚑 Prepare the ambulance emergency kit and oxygen supply
🍼 Organize therapeutic milk to prevent further malnutrition
🩺 Perform basic pediatric resuscitation if needed
📋 Maintain daily ambulance inventory checklist
💊 Collect and distribute medications and medical items
🧪 Facilitate lab/X-ray requests and retrieve results
Monitoring & Reporting
📊 Compile weekly, monthly, and quarterly referral reports
📊 Track and report bottlenecks with suggested improvements
📊 Ensure compliance with Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) protocols
Flexibility & Deployment
🔁 Be open to redeployment across different units as required
🔄 Follow-up on NOMA referrals to Sokoto until discharge
🚐 Collect and account for patient transport & per diem expenses
Requirements
Education
🎓 Nursing Degree or Diploma with nutrition training
⛑ Basic Life Support (BLS) training is an added advantage
Experience
🗂 Minimum 2 years’ experience required
✅ NGO experience (MSF or others) is desirable
Languages
🗣 Fluent in English (Reading & Writing)
🗣 Hausa language skills are desirable

Remuneration
